7 Ways to Better Air Quality

7 Ways to Better Air Quality

When it comes to environmental hazards like forest fires, one thing we prioritize is protecting our lungs. Breathing in that smoky air can really wreak havoc on our respiratory system, but don't worry, we've got some tips to help keep those lungs in healthy.

In this article, I’m going to highlight the most important steps you can take to protect your lungs from environmental pollutants.

Protecting yourself and your family from bad air quality is important for maintaining good health. Here are some steps you can take to minimize exposure to pollutants and improve indoor and outdoor air quality:

#1—stay informed—

Stay informed: Keep track of air quality reports in your area. Websites, apps, or local weather stations often provide real-time information on air quality index (AQI) levels. This will help you plan outdoor activities and take necessary precautions.

#2—Practice outdoor air quality protection—

Be aware of high-pollution days: Limit your time outdoors, especially during days when air quality is poor. If you must go out, try to schedule outdoor activities during times when pollution levels are lower, such as early mornings or late evenings.

Invest in some high-quality masks that are designed to filter out those pesky particles.

Use protective masks: In areas with severe air pollution, wearing masks that are specifically designed to filter out fine particles (e.g., N95 masks) can help reduce inhalation of pollutants.

#3—Create a clean indoor environment—

Use high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters: Consider using HEPA filters in your home's ventilation system, air purifiers, or portable air cleaners. These filters can effectively remove airborne pollutants, including fine particles and allergens.

#4—Maintain good indoor hygiene

vacuuming with a HEPA filter-equipped vacuum cleaner, and washing bedding and curtains. This helps reduce the accumulation of dust, pollen, and other allergens.

#5—Keep indoor humidity levels in check

High humidity can promote the growth of mold and dust mites, which can worsen air quality and trigger respiratory problems. Use dehumidifiers or air conditioners to maintain optimal humidity levels (between 30% and 50%)

#6—Encourage regular exercise

Engage in physical activity to improve lung capacity and overall health. However, be mindful of exercising outdoors in areas with poor air quality.

During periods of extremely poor air quality, create a safe haven at home. Close windows and doors, use air purifiers, and keep indoor activities low-impact to minimize exposure.

#7 Stay hydrated with clean water

Drinking plenty of water helps keep your respiratory system moist and can aid in flushing out toxins. For the cleanest water without toxins, filter and purify your water before drinking.

Our lungs deserve all the TLC, so let's take these precautions and breathe easy even during challenging times!
